Scouting Girona before TBEX Europe 2012

World Winder is so excited for September’s travel blogging convention with TBEX Girona that we showed up in Spain over a month early.  We visited Girona over a month early to scout out the town and learn some logistics.  Now that we have been traveling for almost thirteen months straight we are poised to learn more about the travel writing industry.

A loop of tapas at Txalaka in Girona.

Melissa and I have experience assisting companies at conventions from Atlantic City to San Francisco, but this is the first time we’ll be representing ourselves and our website.  We look forward to meeting new contacts, learning and sharing what we’ve discovered on our journeys, and attending the spectacular pre and post trips that the Tourism Board of Girona has organized.

The Ibis Hotel is a short walk or bus ride from the center of Girona, Spain.

We lodged at the Ibis Hotel during our two days in town.  The hotel is located a short bus ride from Girona’s main train and bus terminal on the L2 bus.  You can buy your ticket on board.  To get to the Ibis, you will pass two large supermarkets, a hospital, and get off at a traffic circle.  Then take a steep hill to the parking lot or if your bags prevent the ascent, you can walk parallel to driving traffic and make a left to get to the hotel.  Once you check-in and drop off your belongings the walk into town is easy.  Or you can just take the L2 back since it returns to the city center.

The staff at the Ibis Hotel, a popular chain on the continent, is knowledgeable and courteous.  They provided us with maps, directions for walking to the center, and recommended some area restaurants including Txalaka for tapas.  We also received great information from the Girona Tourism Information Center.  They gave us a heads up on some great areas for restaurants like Plaza Independencia.  We did some people watching at a restaurant named Frankfurter Konig SC.  The tourist center also provided us with information on laundry, bike rentals, and sweet shops that bake local specialties.  Bring on TBEX Europe 2012.  It’s time to take our travelography to another level.

Take long walks around Girona and you”ll witness the pride locals feel about their region.

Peaceful parks, picturesque bridges, and jovial plazas dot Girona from end to end.

Mega supermarkets like Mercadona, Maxi Dia %, and Carrefour are a short walk from the Ibis Hotel or downtown Girona.  It makes self-catering a possibility.

Frankfurter Konig SC on Plaza Independencia was our go-to for patatas bravas and other simple dishes.
