Melissa and I had just missed a major festival when we arrived in the market town of Otavalo. But we saw an intriguing event poster on our first walk around our newest temporary neighborhood. Scanning names listed vertically downward in jagged heavy metal fonts read band names like: AVERSION, INFERYUS, CABAL, and MORTAL DECISION. We then realized that we’d been fortunate to stumble upon a heavy metal festival and decided to hit the local stadium to see the show Yamor Rock 2011.
The morning of the show we awoke early to explore the weekly Otavalo animal market, then headed to the famed Plaza de Ponchos. On weekdays this plaza is relatively quiet. But on Saturdays the market explodes in all directions engulfing nearby streets and sidewalks in colors, aromas, and congestion. At night we attended Yamor Rock 2011 at the Estadio Municipal de Otavalo to enjoy music provided by eight of the eighteen performing bands.
Here is a video performance of Aztra playing a Metallica medley. They covered “Am I Evil?” off of Metallica’s Kill ‘Em All and interspersed parts of “Master of Puppets” off the album with the same name.

The bands were definitely awesome but the backdrop of the Andes Mountains was insane. Liters of beer were only US$1 so that was a plus too!
