Visiting Marcus and Hiromi in Hiroshima, her mother and aunt had prepared a banquet
In October 2001, Melissa and I moved to Japan to teach English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and search for adventure. For fourteen months we unwittingly stepped into food paradise. In the summer of 2009, we returned for a two-week visit and traveled using the JR pass. Of course we went back to visit friends and former hometowns, Kozoji and Tajimi. We also went back to see some of our favorite sights as travelers and not expats. Yet as we readied our backpacks and created an itinerary, we daydreamed of our favorite restaurants and dishes. Here are some culinary highlights from our first week.

We introduced many new English teachers to okonomiyaki beneath the train station in Nagoya, Japan

Warming up at a noodle shop in Kozoji, Japan

Amazing meals at bargain prices in supermarkets

Toyoko-Inn is a hotel chain serving hearty and healthy breakfasts

Roasting a whole fish over fire

We met Yoshi and Miharu with their daughter for food on sticks

Our Lonely Planet guided us to Indian food in Kyoto

Udon noodles in Kurashiki

Hiromi made Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki
