The World’s Only Airport Brewery

Jetsream Beer: Served Cold, Made On-site in Munchen

Long layovers are a welcome predicament in Franz-Josef Strauss Airport in Munich, Germany.  Two terminals offer supermarkets, gourmet food courts, and enough shopping to distract the crankiest of world travelers.  But with an on-premise, fully functioning, open-air beer garden, Munich Airport wins my vote for most enjoyable stopover.

The Airbrau

The only airport brewery on Earth, Airbrau offers seating inside its state of the art brewpub as well as sunbathed, open-air seating.  Trees cast cool shade and a shallow reflection pool sits as the centerpiece of the outdoor area.  Waitresses in traditional garb balance liters of fresh brews from the bar to jetlagged patrons.  On a layover between London and Ancona in Italy, Neil and I considered taking the S-Bahn or a taxi into Munich for a quick beer and spaetzle in town.  When we read about the Airbrau, we shook off that plan and headed through the vine-twined archway of the brewery.

Half liters of beer start at 2.40 Euro.  The selection topples with seasonal beers and a platoon of taps, pouring: a hoppy lager called Source Flyer, the Weiss beer Cumulus, a traditional Bavarian called the Jetstream, the strong doppelbock Aviator, a malted wheat Mayday, and a summer beer called Airnten.  Menus are in English and German.  Just point and smile.  Your beer will arrive cold and frothy.  For under US$4, Airbrau beer is a great bargain!

The Dining Menu

After you’ve enjoyed the libations, consider a meal at Airbrau.  Neil and I split an order of sauerkraut, while I dove into a grilled fillet of trout and he enjoyed some roasted pork with potato salad.

Plenty of Seats at the Munich Beer Garden

Specials are available throughout the week:  schnitzel on Mondays, noodles and pastas on Tuesdays, fish Fridays, and grilled delicacies such as roast suckling pig on Saturdays.  Prices range from 3 Euro for snacks to 18.90 for the Super Sonic, a feast of roast pork, pork knuckles, and duck with dumplings, sides, and a liter of beer.  With free parking and affordable menu, the Airbrau also welcomes local clientele from Munich.

So, where have you had a great pint of beer?
